The Sound of Success

Posted by PC_LOAD_LETTER on Mar 2, 2010 in MOTENG NEWS

It’s comical how something as seemingly innocuous as a simple sound can illicit such polar responses from people. To me, knuckle cracking is one of the most off-putting sounds I can think of. I detest it. That simple “pop-pop-pop” sound of fingers or toes or backs just sends shivers down my spine. Oh, it is gross! For a split second I feel nauseous. I don’t know what it is about the sound that drives me nuts but it does. Well, it does unless I am the one making the noise. If I am the one applying the pressure and making that sharp snap sound I am in heaven. Its the sound of sweet relief for my joints. It just feels so good. That sound goes from being the bane of my existence to the single most satisfying split second of the day depending solely on where I stand. It’s all just about perspective.

Serf’s Up! (XL100 LED)

Posted by PC_LOAD_LETTER on Jan 14, 2010 in FLASHLIGHTS, MOTENG NEWS, PUBLIC SAFETY

My old roommate was a complete jerk. I don’t want to name names because I am not one to trash talk….oh, who am I kidding, his name is Brian. He was, and probably still is, a complete jerk. He was an anti-social sack of anger who sat on the couch, drinking and watching golf as if his life depended on it. Anyone that interrupted him was considered a nuisance and was glared at until they left. Our living room was his domain which he ruled over with an iron fist. A kingdom in which he was the tyrannical monarch, looking down on others from his throne of a couch, leaving only sporadically to go to work or to the fridge for another beer. Like any growing country, Brian’s kingdom became more technologically advanced as time progressed. The small television perched atop of a frumpy stand seemed to get larger by the month. As the screen grew, so did the stereo, then the gaming systems, and finally the remote control itself. What once was a simple living room over time transformed into Escondido’s largest electrical drain. Eventually the TV stand was phased out to accommodate a television almost the size of the wall itself. A second smaller screen was installed in the upper corner of the room, muted, and constantly set on ESPN. The sound system had more speakers than the Edwards Cinema, the Xbox contained about a million unbeatable scores, and all of it was controlled by one massive remote control.

The Antidote!

Posted by PC_LOAD_LETTER on Nov 5, 2009 in FLASHLIGHTS, KNIVES & CUTLERY, MOTENG NEWS

I find it fitting that Halloween comes right before November. All Hallows Eve is hyped as being the spookiest day of the year. It’s a day of scary movies, costumes, tricks, and frights. To the average Joe this day looks like it’s the most terrifying day on our calendar but to me it’s not. Halloween is just a last reprieve, a ghoulish celebration that distracts us from what is coming. It gives us one last chance to smile and party carelessly before the real horror begins; the holiday shopping season.
Every day, starting November 1st until Christmas Eve, becomes exponentially more ghastly as throngs of people clog the malls and shops, snarling traffic and growing more and more anxious as they try and find something for the relatives and friends that they barely see or talk to anyway. The for those two long months the all normal people disappear and the world becomes infested with clueless shoppers, aimlessly rambling about looking for a bargain or, at minimum, an item that they can buy in bulk for multiple aunts, uncles, and so on.

Streamlight® Helps Guide Development of Flashlight Industry Standards

Posted by Kelsey Stewart on Oct 9, 2009 in MOTENG NEWS

Until now, there have been no standards-based methods to evaluate flashlights. Customers couldn’t tell how a light would perform until they bought it and tried it for themselves, which sometimes resulted in a costly mistake. And there was no way to police false product claims made by manufacturers, which was frustrating for companies like Streamlight® that work hard to make quality lighting tools.

That’s why Streamlight was instrumental in forming a coalition of industry leaders to create standardized tests and a uniform rating system for flashlight equipment. The result of their efforts is called the ANSI (American National Standards Institute)/NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) FL1 Standards.

Developed with the guidance of NEMA and representatives from 14 different flashlight companies, the new standards help customers rate and compare the most important features of personal lighting tools. They are the culmination of more than two years of research, discussion and testing among the participating manufacturers, who set aside competitive differences to arrive at a consensus for standards.

The Overachiever in the Class

Posted by PC_LOAD_LETTER on Apr 29, 2009 in INDUSTRY NEWS, KNIVES & CUTLERY, MOTENG NEWS
Other than seeing orders come through for their products and the occasional email, my knowledge of 888 Professional Knives was very limited.  All I knew was that they were a new line for us, that they had an interesting look, and that they seemed to have a nice following.   So when Walter Kaihatu came into Moteng International to give us the lowdown, I carried with me no preconceived notions about their company or their products.
Walter sat with us and I have to admit I was relieved when he explained that 888 was a new company (so my ignorance was somewhat justified) and were looking to make a name in the tactical industry.  After a few pleasantries, Walter opened his bag, pulled out three knives and their corresponding pamphlets and got down to business.  He informed us about their philosophy, the history and about the makers.  I was impressed that a new company such as theirs was able to boast about the names associated with their line; Roy Huntington, a retired police officer and editor for American Handgunner, designed their new CopTool and Master Knifesmith, Kirk Rexroat, designed the WrightKnife and the S.O.L. Knife.

The Kershaw Packrat–Kershaw’s newest “Speed-Safe”

Posted by Knife Nerd on Apr 22, 2009 in KNIVES & CUTLERY, MOTENG NEWS
Kershaw’s first new assisted-opener for 2009 is the US-made (like all of their Ken Onion-designed “Speed-Safe” models) Packrat (K1665 and K1665ST). These have exceptionally comfortable and very grippy (to this user) textured G-10 overlays (on top of stainless) handle and bead-blasted Sandvik 14C28N stainless steel blades. We tested a plain-edge model (pictured) on a variety of everyday tasks like opening packages and wire-cutting and found this knife to be exceptionally sharp out-of-the-box and extremely hard to get dull. Like the Shallot model, this particular design does not require a safety as little more effort is required to start the assisted-opening feature–this is not a knife that will fire accidentally. This a much more stout design than some of the others in their lineup but is very comfortable in the hand and looks like it should weigh more than the 4.2 ounces that it does. Dealers can (and should!) order from Moteng right away as these are in stock now.

The Inner Beauty of the Beast

Posted by PC_LOAD_LETTER on Apr 15, 2009 in KNIVES & CUTLERY, MOTENG NEWS

Today while I was perusing through Camping Life Magazine I saw they released their yearly top picks for Camping Gear.  With so many items out there in this field it would be fairly easy to miss a great product and just give the award to the newest, shiniest toy out there.  It seems that isn’t the case with this list. Right there in the middle of the winners for 2009 a glimmering Golden Stake was bestowed upon CRKT’s Zilla-Tool.  It’s nice to see that a tool with the visual appeal of Lyle Lovett was given such high accolades from one of our industries better magazines.  CRKT has a certain knack for making aesthetically bewildering tools that become essential after a few uses (I am admittedly a huge fan of the CRKT Guppie) so when I took a closer look at the Zilla-Tool I had a good idea what to expect.  I went to our warehouse and picked one of these bad boys out and right away I was puzzled by it.  The elongated body gives it a bit of bulk and the oddest feature is the set of pliers that conspicuously stick out of the end of the piece. Judging by looks alone, this tool is one that was pretty lonely on prom night.

Not Neutral About the Swiss.

Posted by PC_LOAD_LETTER on Apr 13, 2009 in KNIVES & CUTLERY, MOTENG NEWS, PUBLIC SAFETY

When I think of Switzerland my mind is filled with images of cheese, chocolate, maidens, watches, and knives. I figure, any which way you slice it, that isn’t a bad group of things to be looking at. So when I heard that the world famous Wenger Company would be stopping by to show us their line of quality Swiss products I was pretty excited. Even after I found out that they were ONLY bringing samples of their watches and knives I was still excited!

Loaded up with a mind boggling amount of items, Don Sneyd and Todd Strohmeier of Wenger came into our conference room with their intimate product knowledge and earnest enthusiasm and captivated the sales and purchasing teams from start to finish. What was nice was that even though I was not here the last time Wenger gave a demonstration here at Moteng it didn’t matter. I have used and owned Wenger products most of my life. I think it is safe to say most people reading this have as well. “Wenger Swiss Army” is synonymous with quality, versatility, and history. Their products are the best friends of Scouts, outdoorsmen, and craftspeople the world over. With that in mind Don and Todd didn’t have to waste any time trying to preach to the choir about why their company is great. They were able to spend time on the intricacies of their lines and really focused on getting us even more familiar with their products.

Buck - Quality in Every Way

Posted by Knife Nerd on Mar 13, 2009 in MOTENG NEWS

In unsure time like the ones we are living in it is nice to find anything that is a constant; something that has persevered through good times and bad and is showing no signs of wavering.  In our industry Buck Knives is proving to be one of those beacons of hope.  The other day Bryan Palle from Buck Knives came in to say hello and to inform the Moteng sales and purchasing teams about the new products their company is rolling out for 2009.  Now, everyone should be aware of Buck.  They are a household name in knives and have become that by making quality knives that are as practical as they are trustworthy.  So when Bryan started his demonstration I was not surprised at all that the new line looked stellar or that they were innovative. What I was pleasantly surprised with was the amount of new products that ran the gamut from hunting to household to rescue applications.  I have to admit, I was impressed with some of the new line.  What is most impressive though is where the line is made. In the middle of these dreary economic times Buck Knives is taking a stand.  Instead of turning tail and outsourcing their new products to foreign countries Buck Knives is keeping jobs in America by producing almost their entire new line here in the U.S.A.  Only one item in the entire bunch is made outside of our borders!   It’s something that they take a great deal of pride in and it shows in their products.  So as you peruse through our vast online catalog and you purchase some of the new products by Buck Knives you can rest assured that you are making a wise investment.
